“‘I was mocked’ — Sophia Momodu reveals trauma from backlash over pregnancy with Davido

Nigerian influencer and entrepreneur Sophia Momodu has opened up about the emotional and psychological abuse she experienced after becoming pregnant out of wedlock with singer Davido.

Momodu, speaking at a United Nations General Assembly event in New York on Monday, said she faced intense ridicule because she was a pastor’s daughter who had a child outside marriage.

According to her, the public criticism and negative comments became so overwhelming that she struggled to speak up for herself despite being a well-known personality.

“I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crazy. I had to find myself in the midst of all that.

“For a long time, I didn’t have a voice despite being famous. I was worried and getting drained by the negative criticisms. If you are a Nigerian, you will know that it is almost a taboo for a pastor’s daughter to have a child out of wedlock,” she said.

She explained that she eventually regained her voice after repeatedly being made to feel that her experience was too shameful to discuss publicly.

Sophia Momodu is the mother of Davido’s first daughter, Imade Adeleke.
